The battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia was a draw because neither ship was sunk but the Monitor changed naval warfare and ship design forever. The Monitor proved that it could stop the Confederate powerhouse, the CSS Virginia, could be stopped after it had steamrolled two ships the day before. And the battle showed that the design of the Monitor was very effective and that an all iron ship could float and be functional.
